The company

Flying is not the only matter of trust

For romantics, flying is the elation of freedom and adventure above the clouds. For you, the professional, there’s a lot more to it. It is an interaction between high tech, cool intelligence, know-how and responsibility. But it is also an interaction, for the acceptable risks of which there are many different classes of insurance.

There is no insurance, however, to protect you from taking out the wrong aviation insurance policy. That’s why such decisions are also essentially a matter of trust. Place your trust in the competence gained over time by responsible insurance experts. Place your trust in the experience of insurance brokers active worldwide. Place your trust in the wide range of insurance offered by BGI AG and GBJ Ltd.: welcome!

Types of insurance

Aviation insurance

Whereas the long-standing owner of an aircraft will be fully acquainted with the necessary classes of insurance, a first-time purchaser will not find it easy to choose between the various insurance options. That's why we have put together here a list of the most commonly used insurance classes. The explanations given serve only by way of initial information.

CSL insurance

As an alternative to owner and passenger third-party insurance, a policy providing combined cover is also available: CSL (combined single limit) insurance.

CSL insurance is a combination of owner and passenger third-party insurance under which a standard sum is insured per damaging event for both owner and passenger third-party losses.

The insurance cover is the same as that in the individual classes, yet the higher, unlimited, lump-sum cover for the individual person provides greater flexibility and security in the event of a claim.

The cover offered by the insurers under a CSL policy is sufficient, that is to say it is higher than the sum of individual cover available under owner and passenger third-party insurance.

Passenger third-party insurance

Aviation third-party insurance covers the owner in the event of claims for damages asserted on the basis of legal regulations. The third-party insurer examines whether such claims are justified, settles a claim where justified and, where not justified, rejects it.

Passenger third-party insurance covers the statutory liability for the carrying of individuals and luggage on board aircraft. The policy covers the personal liability of all individuals involved in the flying, operation and control of the aircraft as well as that of the air-freight carrier, if this is not the policyholder.

Particulars of the aircraft type, registration number, the number of passenger/crew seats and the purpose (airline or non-airline) are necessary for a quotation to be prepared.

Owner third-party insurance

Aviation third-party insurance covers the owner in the event of claims for damages asserted on the basis of legal regulations. The third-party insurer examines whether such claims are justified, settles the claim where justified and, where not justified, rejects it.

Owner third-party insurance covers the owner’s statutory third-party liability in connection with the use of the insured aircraft and is a compulsory insurance. The policy also covers the personal liability of all individuals involved in the flying, operation and control of the aircraft.

Not insured are third-party liability claims for personal injury and loss of property of passengers and those travelling on board the aircraft (see passenger third-party insurance).

Particulars of the aircraft type, registration number, year of construction, serial number, maximum take-off weight (MTOW), purpose and geographical area of operation are necessary for calculation of the insurance premium.

Hull insurance

Aviation hull insurance provides cover in the event of loss of or damage to an aircraft. This class of insurance covers all risks to which the insured aircraft is exposed up to the amount of the sum insured.
The cover includes risks to which the aircraft is exposed both in the air and on the ground.

If required, cover can alternatively be restricted exclusively to ground risk (burglary and theft, vandalism, storm, hail and lightning).

Depending upon the type of aircraft and its use, the following information is important for risk assessment:

type of aircraft, registration number, year of construction, serial number, purpose, pilot’s experience, geographical area of operation, annual use in hours, previous damage.

Third-party or hull war risk insurance

The terms of aviation hull and/or third-party insurance exclude losses arising, among other things, from war and terrorism-related events. It is immaterial whether such events occur in the policyholder’s own country or in a country currently exposed to the risk of such events.

By taking out a hull war risk insurance policy or including the so-called AVN.52 clause in your third-party insurance, you can obtain cover for such risks.

In addition to losses related to war and terrorism, the insurer also covers losses arising, for example, from the hijacking of the insured aircraft, acts of sabotage, strikes and revolution.

Individual seat liability accident insurance

Each authorised person using an aircraft may take out a seat liability accident insurance policy for a previously agreed sum to cover invalidity or death. Such a policy provides cover for pilots, crew members, flight trainees and passengers. In addition to the option of insuring all seats of an aircraft, cover can also be arranged for pilot seats or passenger seats only (seat system) or for specifically named individuals.

This insurance is a perfect complement to the private 24-hour accident insurance for pilots and crew members since the latter usually excludes accidents occurring during active flying or working time.

The aircraft type, number of seats and/or the names of the individuals to be insured are required for calculation of the risk and of the insurance premium.

Mehr erfahren

Engine insurance

This class of aircraft insurance does not include losses caused by internal damage suddenly arising in the engine (overheating, material fracture, etc.). Events which have an impact on the engine from the outside are covered by aircraft hull insurance.

Find out from your aircraft maintenance company just how expensive such damage can be. We will be happy to quote you a premium if you send us details of your aircraft type, the engine type, model, year of construction and registration number of the aircraft and its purpose.

Interruption of business insurance

If an aircraft is suspected of having hull or engine damage or if such damage actually exists, the business many incur high consequential costs due to the aircraft’s unavailability for operation.

Commercial aircraft operators have the option of insuring against such risks by taking out interruption of business insurance for aircraft. The compensation paid by the insurer can then compensate for any additional costs, fixed costs and loss of profit incurred.

Under the terms of the policy, a limited-period deductible (e.g. 2 days) depending upon the type of aircraft and use, and a maximum settlement period (e.g. 20 days) are agreed with the insurer.
